Victory Gardens Program
Our Victory Gardens Program (VGP) builds and manages vegetable production beds at partnered sites in the community.
This program took shape in 2020 as a way to further meet food insecurity needs for our community during the pandemic. In tandem with our YGP gardens, these gardens located in central public sites are designed to provide more vegetable access to households across Galveston County as well as provide beautiful havens which empower connection with the outdoors & food for all who pass by.
GoFM staff ensures consistent maintenance & abundant harvests at our VGP gardens. In collaboration with our Community Partners and volunteers, we look forward to growing the VGP family of gardens for years to come!
Moody Early Childhood Center Victory Garden
Our VGP pilot site was Moody Early Childhood Center. 12 raised beds grow vegetables year-round for the families and staff of MECC. Harvest distribution rotates between the different MECC age groups/classes, and parents & MECC staff are our primary volunteers!
McGuire Dent Victory Garden
In 2021, we partnered with the City of Galveston to break ground on our 2nd garden! Adjacent to McGuire Dent Recreation Center in Menard Park, this new garden is in the same spot as a previous garden–we replaced old weathered beds and improved the space.
This is our first VGP garden where half of the beds are reserved for members of the public to ‘adopt’ as their own and grow their own vegetables! 10 beds are ‘Community’ beds, and 8 are managed by GOFM. The harvests from the GOFM-managed beds are distributed to children enrolled in youth programs with the City of Galveston.
To learn more about how to adopt a bed or get on the waitlist, email the Gardens Manager at victorygardens@gofarmersmarket.com
future sites will include other daycares, apartment complexes, parks, and other communal public spaces.
Volunteer at VGP!
Volunteers from all sources are welcome & needed, but there is a special focus on first enrolling folks from our partner sites and any neighbors closest to the garden itself.
We grow as much food as possible and give the harvest to the immediate community served by our partners!
