Now Hiring: Young Gardeners Program Garden Leader
Summary: We're seeking a creative and dedicated Part-Time Garden Leader for our K-8 students in the GISD Afterschool program. Your role involves teaching gardening skills and lessons using YGP plans, engaging up to 25 students per session within an hour.
You'll foster enthusiasm among volunteers, teachers, and students, working independently to achieve high outcomes. Being open-minded and fun, with experience in teaching or gardening, is key. Expect occasional weekend work, food prep, and hands-on gardening activities.
Schedule:
Monday through Thursday 2-4 days a week (location dependent)
3:45-6pm (may vary slightly min 1.5 hrs per day)
Min 1 Friday per month
Occasional Sundays (1-2 per year)

Major Responsibilities:
Plan, prepare, and deliver lessons to all students in the class.
Prepare garden materials for each session and brief Garden Aide volunteers.
Tailor teaching to meet individual and group educational needs and abilities.
Provide oral and written assessments, reports, and references for students.
Complete administrative reports and documentation
Use audiovisual aids and adaptations during lessons.
Execute weekly garden tasks, including harvesting, cooking demos, and teaching.
Maintain professional teaching standards and quality.
Participate in training and development opportunities.
Ensure student discipline, health, and safety.
Ability to establish and consistently implement classroom management techniques
Attend meetings related to curriculum, garden care, and program administration.
Manage equipment use, maintenance, inventory and safety.
Engage in YGP family outreach events.
Monitor student attendance and manage volunteer coordination.
Foster a facilitative learning environment and sense of wonder among teachers.
Maintain a clean, maintained and robust school garden of vegetables, herbs, flowers & trees
Education/Experience:
Some teaching experience preferred
Some gardening experience preferred, not required
Enjoy outdoors, working with children and getting hands dirty
Bilingual - Spanish - useful but not required
Physical Requirements:
Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions
Should be able to work on your feet for hours at a time
Ability to lift 30lbs
Ability to safely use gardening tools and implements
