Now Hiring: Gardens & community Assistant

The Gardens & Community Assistant (GCA) will support the management of the YGP and VGP gardens.

The GCA will be stewarded by the Gardens Manager, carrying out various tasks to ensure adequate crop production at all GOFM gardens. They will distribute and deliver tools and garden materials, oversee large and small garden projects (building, weeding, planting, organizing, etc.) Additionally, over time they will coordinate and host weekly Community Days held in the gardens every Saturday.

The Gardens & Community Assistant (GCA) is a part-time position (15hrs/wk) paid at $20/hr. This position is paid through the end of 2022. The longevity of this position will be evaluated in September 2022.

  • - Reports to Gardens Manager for assignments and feedback. 

  • - Meets weekly either in person or via teleconference to discuss the status of current projects and to take on new and shifting tasks. 

  • - Pilots the GCA role by regularly checking in to discuss the effectiveness and maintains flexibility as responsibilities are adjusted.

  • - Supports the existing community environment GOFM has built through cheerful and accountable interactions with volunteers, partners, students and site facility staff.

  • -Participates in development and implementation of strategic plans, work plans, and other organization-wide efforts seeking to accomplish GOFM’s mission and goals.

  • -Provides guidance and direction to volunteers onsite. GCA demonstrates GOFM’s appreciation for volunteer time and efforts, through actions and words.

  • -Inputs raw data from garden events into relevant spreadsheets, Google forms and other documents as needed.  

  • - Coordinates weekly rotating Community Days at garden sites, working in concert with Market Managers and Director of Operations

  • -Attends weekly staff meeting with other GOFM employees.

  • -Conducts regular inventory of supplies. Cares for equipment and brings necessary maintenance, replacement, or reordering to the attention of the Gardens Manager

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    • - A strong interest in environmental, edible and organic landscape design and maintenance.

    • -A positive attitude & strong work ethic.

    • -Strong working knowledge of edible garden plants (fruiting vines, fruit trees, vegetables).

    • -Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

    • -Preference will be given to applicants that are passionate about sustainable food production and applying deep organic principles to garden maintenance. 

    • -Comfortable working with adults & children

    • -Attention to details and displays a strong aptitude for organization

    • -Time management skills and self-motivating focus required

    • -Strong customer service skills- displays enthusiastic, outgoing, and helpful behavior

    • -Ability to finish projects with minimal management

    • -Aptitude for prioritizing and completing multiple tasks within time restraints

    • -Competent in Google Docs, Google Sheets & email

    • -Willingness to learn and expand job skills

    • -Flexible time schedule to accommodate variable hours and market activities required

    • -Must have reliable transportation and access to a computer with internet connection

Education/Experience:

    • -Horticulture and gardening experience, education, or degree.

    • -Experience with production farming, landscape maintenance and use of garden tools and equipment.

    • -Passion for farmers' markets, local food, and sustainability. Believes in the value of fresh, locally-grown goods and increasing food access for all demographics on the island. 

    • -Fluency in Spanish language, written and spoken preferred, but not required

Physical Requirements:

    • -Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions

    • -Should be able to lift approx. 50 lbs

    • -Should be able to work on their feet for hours at a time
